There were great Tzadikim that would wear Tefillin all the time and didn't go four steps without them, Like the Gemara states about Rav, Rav Zeirah and Rav Yochanan ben zakai as well as many others.
There is a story about R' Eliezer that was once staying by someone's house, and he took his clothing and Tefillin off to immerse in the Mikvah, then his host told him that the other mikvah has better water, so he got dressed and put the Tefillin back on and went to the other mikvah and the distance was only four steps.
We should try to wear the Tefillin as long as possible, if not all day, at least we should leave them on a bit after Praying and study a bit.
The Zohar says: "whoever puts on TEFILLIN a voice calls out throughout all the worlds "give honor to the image of the king," because when a Jew puts on TEFILLIN godliness shines upon him etc.
